Wayfinding is a practice we engage in all the time with little to no thought.

When things don’t go according to plan, we adapt, think on our feet and respond as best we can. Sometimes this goes well. Other times we may miss critical clues, get thrown off centre, and find ourselves disoriented by the sheer complexity we’re facing in our personal and professional lives.

While we can stumble into wayfinding, and leave it up to chance, it is also a practice, something we can cultivate deliberately to become more capable of meeting life's inevitable unknowns.

As we deepen our wayfinding practice, we become more confident in our ability to read signals and sense beneath the surface of situations. We grow more trusting of our own way of moving through the world, including how we make decisions, and more able to meet our lives with clarity and ease.

For wayfinders, our path will never quite look like the paths we see around us. In this sense, finding our way is as much an inner journey as an outer one. It can feel like a solitary practice, and yet it's meant to happen with and through others, it's an inherently relational way of being in the world.

Why the dojo?

Because wayfinding is so immediate, we can lose touch with our own skill and wisdom. Being in a practice space with others offers mirroring that helps us connect with more of who we are, hone our skills and grow more capable in all areas of life that wayfinding touches (which is most of them!).

What is a dojo?

A dojo is a practice space. Coming out of the Shinto lineage and early animist traditions, it is described as “a place of the way.” Here, the way describes a lifelong path of self-cultivation, informed by peeling back the layers to get closer to ultimate reality, rather than relying on a physical path, map, or external set of rules. In the Daoist tradition, “The Way” is the cosmic force that flows through all things in the universe. The earliest dojos were held in Buddhist temples, where practitioners engaged in meditation and immersive learning. Dojos are spaces for mental, physical, and soul growth.
